NotesMapungubwe Private Nature Reserve is situated on the Limpopo River in South Africa, earmarked for inclusion into The Greater Mapungubwe TFCA. It is bordered by one of the most spectacular World Heritage Sites and National Parks.

Where Elephants, Lion and Wild Dog move freely once again between South Africa and Botswana, and the remains of the old civilizations take you back in time.
Mapungubwe Private Nature Reserve. Feel the presence of the Bushman's spirits while the elephants trumpet in the background and the sun sets over the Limpopo river, it's last rays touching the branches of the magnificent baobab trees and the koppies along the river banks.

The reserve is located 30 kilometers northwest of the small frontier town of Alldays but stretches all the way north to Pontdrift on the Botswana border. The axis of the reserve has a length of over 20 kilometers.

It's a 4,5 hour's drive on quiet roads from Pretoria and only 1,5 hours from Polokwane. (Pietersburg)

Particular care was taken to create a layout that would keep the landscape undisturbed whilst at the same time locations for the plots were chosen to cater for every body's specific interests. Plots are not spread out throughout the whole reserve but restricted to an area of 1,700 hectares of the 3 500 hectares. Added to this, owners can enjoy traversing rights over more than 20 000 hectares of the greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area by arrangement.

This has resulted in a limited number of river plots, a variety of plots on dry riverbeds and a few unique stands overlooking the reserve all the way into Botswana. Extra care was taken in order to ensure privacy for each plot in that none of the houses should be visible from neighbouring plots.

Bushveld stands are sold from R900 000.00. Dry riverbed stands are for sale around R1,800,000.00 and river stands are for sale at R2,600,000.00

Invest where elephants, lion and wild dog move freely once again between South Africa and Botswana, and the remains of the old civilizations take you back in time.

Only 64 stands in the development of which 15as already been sold out.

The reserve is set up in such a way that an optimum combination between luxury bush living and a serious wilderness experience is achieved.

* a very low density of maximum 64 plots on > 3,500 hectares was allowed;
* each one-hectare plot has unique settings and views;
* each plot has guaranteed privacy;
* only 14 plots on the river thus keeping most of the riverbanks open for game viewing;
* more than 7 kilometers Limpopo river frontage;
* open to the great game reserves in Botswana;
* traversing over no less than an additional 20,000 hectares;
* architecture incorporating the cultural heritage aspects of the area;
* diverse and unique wildlife ranging from the Big 5, gemsbok and eland as well as exquisite
birdlife;
* diverse and unique flora varying form the magnificent Baobab to the rare sesame tree.

The reserve is situated on the Limpopo river in South Africa, earmarked for inclusion into The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area. It is bordered by one of the most spectacular World Heritage Sites and National Parks.

The proposed Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area is situated at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, encompassing areas in three countries - Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The proposed area will include the Botswana Northern Tuli Game Reserve; the Mapungubwe National Park, as well as various privately owned ranches in South Africa etc. The inclusion of the various areas is however still under negotiation.

The selection of the Limpopo/Shashe area is based on the rich biodiversity of the area, its scenic beauty and the cultural importance of the archaeological treasures of Mapungubwe. The area supports populations of big game, including the famous Tuli elephant, all major predators, and offers potential for the development of a viable, consumptive and non-consumptive tourism industry.

The wildlife on the reserve and Mapungubwe Game Reserve is exquisite and diverse. Apart from lion, leopard, elephant and the general game such as giraffe, zebra, kudu and waterbuck, large herds of the illusive eland and gemsbok roam the area.

Due to the large riverine forest and riverbank areas the birdlife is exceptional as well, and even inland one can find the exciting species such as the kori bustard or pairs of black eagles (vereaux eagles) hunting for the rockdassies on the koppies.

The rare brown hyena has been seen to make it's dens on top of the koppies and can be heard calling at night along with other nocturnal animals including the spotted hyena.

Despite the fact that the area can go through periods of droughts, the flora has an exceptional beauty and great diversity and the landscape is largely influenced by the magnificent baobabs and koppies spread out over the reserve and will change from one moment to another the further one travels into the reserve.

The dry river beds are home to huge apple leafs, tamboties and leadwoods, whilst on some places old mopani forests houses some of the largest mopani trees ever seen. In other places the open plains will show very little vegetation apart from large clusters of the beautiful shephard's bush and closer to the old sandstone formations the very rare Transvaal sesame tree is found.

Every year the rains transform parts of the farm into yellow and white seas of flowers.

The Capricorn District

The name "Capricorn" is derived from the tropic of capricorn, the bottom of which crosses Limpopo and the northern section of this region. The region of Capricorn stretches from the Ysterberg, all along the foothills of the lush Wolkberg, to the tropic of Capricorn in the north.

The region's position makes it a perfect stopover between Gauteng and the northern areas of the province and between the country's North-Western areas and the world-renowned Kruger National Park. It is also in close proximity to the neighboring countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland.

The Waterberg District

Situated in the magnificent Waterberg Mountain Range of Limpopo, the Waterberg District is the ideal getaway where the weary traveller can relax and revel in the great natural beauty of the bushveld savannah and its rich wildlife heritage. The Waterberg Mountains stretch along more than 5 000 km2 of spectacular vistas and scenic valleys - the ideal destination off the beaten tourism track. The area is steeped in a history and some artifacts found here date back to Stone Age times. The area is a mosaic of culture and tradition as is reflected by the different rural tribes such as the Bapedi, Tswana and Basotho, while the Voortrekkers also left their distinctive mark on the area.

Commercial agriculture is an integral part of this province, and cattle ranching and maize farming are regional institutions - the water-rich valleys of the Limpopo River on the Botswana border provide sweet bushveld grazing, while the plains of the Springbok Flats near the towns of Bela Bela and Mokopane are covered with a colourful quilt of carefully cultivated fields of maize and sunflowers. Otherwise, the bushveld landscape, interspersed with sandstone buttresses and baobab, marula and fever trees, supports a number of towns that make up one of the country's fastest-growing industrial and agricultural districts.

This is one of the most mineralised regions in the world and numerous towns form part of the Bushveld Igneous Complex - a 50,000km2 treasure trove yielding massive amounts of minerals such as vanadium, platinum, nickel and chromium. The Waterberg District offers the tourist a bit of both worlds - an infrastructure of excellent facilities and modern conveniences found in the many game reserves and conservation areas, coupled with the opportunity to experience the African wilderness in its pristine state.

The Vhembe District

Flowing across from the northwest and framing the northern border of this province lies the Vhembe area - a fertile region where baobabs guard the varied countryside and where rockart and caves entice the visitor to uncover its romantic and historical past. One of the main geographical features of this region is the Limpopo, the country's third most important river, which forms South Africa's northern border. This life-giving river provides sustenance to the predominantly hot, dry lands through which it meanders and its many tributaries support several small, thriving farming villages in the region's northern areas.

In this region tourists will find the former independent homelands of Lebowa and Venda where traditional African cultures thrive. In fact, this fertile valley has been home to cultures dating back to the Iron Age. The western section of the region is framed by the rocky spine of the awe-inspiring Soutpansberg (salt pan mountain) range. The range, with a width in some parts over 30km, features a fertile, well-watered plateau receiving high rainfall and supporting a wide range of crops and cultivated lands. The area also boasts many historical sites, from the relics of the Stone Age San and their inimitable rock artwork, to the marks left by the ancestors of the Venda to the tracks of the Voortrekker wagons which carried European migrants into an unknown land and housed their cultures. The visitor to this region will not help but notice, with splendid scenery, an abundance of nature reserves and a thriving people, the prevalence of an untouched nature.

Mopani District

Driving from Limpopo River across Vhembe District towards East-western side, one comes to the beautiful district of Mopani. Its strategical positioning, makes it easily accessible by people from all sides of the province. On the West it borders Sekhukhune while like an Island; Bohlabela spreads through the Eastern side. On the West is Capricorn District. The beautiful towns of Tzaneen, Modjadji’skloof, Phalaborwa and Giyani are key to the economy of Mopani.
